Summer Camps/Workshops

Application: Summer Jazz Camp

July 8-13, 2019

Monday–Friday, 10 am–2:30 pm

Concert on Saturday, July 13, time to be announced

Administered by: Lee Secard

The Colburn Jazz Workshop’s Big Band instructors, Lee Secard and Walter Simonsen give middle school and high school aged students a unique summer experience featuring daily playing and improvisation, jazz theory and ear training, practicing and learning strategies, repertoire, and rehearsals. The week culminates in a performance on July 13. Interested students are invited to submit an audition video.

Video Audition Submission:

For Jazz, the most useful audition video is to submit one where the student is playing along with a recording.

(1) Upload the following attached files to your phone or computer:

(2) Use a cell phone to record the student playing along with the song. Have your student film from the side, so that both hands and the instrument can be seen on the video. Review the result to ensure both the instrument and the recorded track can be heard clearly, and that the visual image shows the student playing with both hands.

(3) The student should improvise according to what they hear, we do not expect perfection, but we do want the students to view this as something fun to do!

(4) Once you have recorded your audition video, come back to this website and click Register Now! below. You will be taken through a series of questions where you can then upload your video. All video submissions should be saved to either YouTube, Dropbox, or Google Drive, where you can provide us with a link to view the video.

We will contact you if we need further information. If you are accepted to the camp, you will be provided further instructions on how to enroll. The estimated cost of the workshop will be $500. There is a $25 non-refundable application fee that will be applied toward the cost of tuition upon acceptance.
