Jazz Theory
Explore theory and harmony as it applies to the jazz idiom, with a focus on ways to approach an improvised solo. Areas of study include tonality, form, ear training, chord extensions, scale sources, thematic ideas, and common progressions. We will also learn to identify common tools and strategies by analyzing solos by jazz masters. Prerequisites: A very strong knowledge of all major scales, key signatures, and triads. Familiarity with 4-part chords strongly recommended. Sightreading not required, but students must be able to read music. Instructor: Ms. Liz Kinnon. Music Theory Summer Intensive: Elementary IB
The intensive is the equivalent of one year of theory and includes at least an hour of homework each day. Classes meet online multiple days per week in a condensed 10 week program. Students may use this opportunity to advance more quickly through the music theory curriculum offered by the Community School. Students must be current continuing students or be pre-approved to enroll; a placement test is available online. All group classes will take place online via Zoom, which requires a strong internet connection and computer/tablet. Students enrolling in a 24 lesson private lesson package can enroll in one intensive for FREE. Students enrolling in a 12 lesson package can enroll in one intensive at 50% off. This discounts are only available during the 2020 summer semester.

Rhythmic Solfege (10-12 year olds)

This 5-day program is for musicians who seek to internalize music through the Dalcroze approach. Students will deepen their musicianship with Dalcroze solfege, rhythm recognition with movement, and dictation. We also work on simple vocal/instrumental improvisation in order to develop inner hearing. This course is recommended for an instrumentalist/vocalist with basic music theory background. 

Students will need access to the piano or their musical instrument for ear training and improvisation.

This class is designed to open up individual musicality, improve sight-reading skills and develop analytical listening skills. We use several musical literature as center pieces. The main subject includes complementary rhythm and basic modulation. The class also works on simple vocal/instrumental improvisation every day. This course is recommended for an instrumentalist/vocalist with basic music theory background.

Students will need access to the piano or their musical instrument for ear training and improvisation.
